Graduated from University of Alberta in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
In 1973 joined his father in Fort McMurray creating SML Industries Ltd.

Developed an A & W Drive Inn, Smitty’s Family Restaurant, Dairy Queen and 5 other independent restaurant, bar & nightclub facilities located in Fort McMurray

Acquired Redwood Ready Mix with 3 plants and Gravel pits located in Fort McMurray, Barrhead & Westlock.
Owned & managed commercial warehouse & retail space.

Managed a human resource numbering 300 employee’s
In 1985, with the introduction of the NEP, Like many in Alberta, the Shields Family lost all their business interests and were forced to start all over again.

Jack Shields continued on as the Member of Parliament, brother John started a successful career in Radio based out of Victoria B.C.  Jim a successful greenhouse operation on Northern Vancouver Island.  Clarence moved to Leduc, starting his first venture for the Shieldco Group of Companies.
